A Reviewer's
Point of View...

"With the keen eye of an anthropologist and the lilt of a storyteller, Del Monte lays out the culture of California's Humboldt County. The people, moviemakers and movie extras alike, are as dissimilar from their neighbors as the victims are from the perpetrators. The sleepy town sits in the shadow of the university campus, providing town and gown conflict. Only in Northern California style the academics are more like '60s hippies and the townspeople, symbolized by the mayor, are allied with the loggers.

The book is as much about relationships as it is about culture. A particularly devious revenge involving mercurochrome is hilarious. The author is acutely aware of the infighting in small towns, and the dialog verges on perfect. We know these people."

Plonk Goes the Weasel

A film company rips off a small redwoods town after offering residents big checks and the sweet possibility of parts in a TV pilot. When the checks bounce, the town is told there’s nothing it can do. But then, in the coastal redwoods, and in southern California’s affluhip Venice and Beverly Hills, the residents go on a dogged hunt for unthinkable and truly wicked revenge. Del Monte’s descriptions of this small town riven by petty jealousies have a stunning intuitive quality. And she has perfect pitch for the resentments and backbiting.
